My Song Choice

Why I have chose this song?
The song I have chosen is a country pop song from the artist Taylor Swift. I think that many of her songs have good lyrics that have a meaning to them and that many of her songs are also about love meaning that her videos will show them as love stories. The song I have chosen is called The way I loved you, I feel that this song has strong lyrics with a strong meaning. I think that I could construct a good video with this song that would show a narrative. I would use Goodwin's illustration method to represent the lyrics of the song.

Why this song has potential
As well as my other two song choices, this song also has meaningful lyrics. I feel that songs with good lyrics would be easier to create a music video for. This is because I can illustrate these lyrics with a story or create a video having no link to the song. This song will also promote the artist more as this song doesn't already have a current video.

I think this song has potential, as the artist is not as well known as others and I can promote her more by choosing this song for a potential music video. The song has meaningful lyrics meaning that I could do a video with illustration or amplification to represent these. Showing a narrative to the song.

Detailed Textual Analysis of a Music Video


Taylor Swift- You Belong With Me

Context
The song You belong with me by Taylor Swift is a country pop song, the song was co-written by Taylor Swift and Liz Rose and produced by Nathan Chapman. It was released on April 21st 2009, by Big Machine Records.This was the third single from Taylor Swifts second studio album, Fearless. The idea for the song came from when Taylor was inspired after hearing a male friend of hers arguing with his girlfriend through a phonecall.

The songs music video was directed by Roman White, the video featured Taylor Swift portraying two characters a 'nerd' and a 'popular girl'. The videos plot centres the nerd secretively loving the male lead, although he has a girlfriend.

The song went on to win an a award at the 2009 MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video Music Awards, but during Taylor Swifts speech, rapper Kanye West rudely interrupted, protesting in support of Beyonce. The song was performed live at numerous venues, being the opening number at the Fearless Tour.

Content

The video begins with a mid-shot of a boy walking around his room on the phone. The songs then begins with the lyric 'your on the phone with your girlfriend shes upset'. The shot then moves to a mid shot of a girl, this girl being the artist Tayor Swift sitting on her bed lip syncing the lyrics 'she doesnt get your humour like I do'. The shots then jump cut between each of them holding up pieces of paper, the artist Taylor Swifts asking if he is ok and his saying 'tired of drama' The next part of the video moves onto a long shot of the artist Taylor Swift dancing around her room singing into a hair brush, then jumping to the boy laughing at what shes doing. The camera then moves back to show the artist chaning her clothes showing as a series of mid shots, while lip syncing the lyrics 'but she wears short skirts,I wear t-shirts'. Showing an extreme close up of Taylors face lip syncing the lyrics. The next shot then shows Taylor Swift with a brown wig, showing her as the boys girlfriend. The shot shows a mid shot of her as as a cheerleader then jumps back too Taylor as herself on the benches. This represents the lyrics 'she's cheer captain and im on the bleachers'.


The next verse, shows Taylor Swift back dancing around her room, this shown as a long shot of her lip syncing the chorous. Then going to an extreme close up of her writing on a piece of paper 'I Love You' while lip syncing the lyrics 'You belong with me'

The next scene of the video shows the artist sitting on a bench lip syncing the lyrics 'Walk in the street with you and your worn out jeans' jumping to a long shot of the boy walking towards her. She is then sitting on the bench laughing with the boy, this shot being a mid shot to represent the lyrics 'laughing on a park bench thinking too myself, hey isnt this easy?' The next shot then shows a close up of the boys girlfriend pulling up in car and calling him over, but this character being played by Taylor Swift. Then jumps back too Taylor as the 'Geek' lip syncing 'hey what you doing with a girl like that?' The next scene then shows the girl on the bleachers and the girl as the cheerleader, them both being played by Taylor Swift. Representing the lyrics in the chorous.


The next verse then shows a shot of Taylor back in her room studying. Then jump cutting to a shot of the boy holding a piece of paper up saying 'not coming tonight?' meaning to the school prom, then Taylor holds up another piece saying 'studying :(' as this is happening, she is also lip syncing the lyrics 'and I know your favourite songs, and you tell me about your dreams, think you know where you belong,think you know its with me'. Then jumps back to a mid shot of him holding another piece saying 'you should come'.


The end scene then shows a long shot of Taylor as the 'geek' dressed up for the school prom, to suprise the boy. By this scene the music slows down and shes lip syncing the lyrics 'can't you see that im the one who understands you'. Then jump cuts to a shot of the other girl trying to pull the boy away from going over to Taylor, but he pulls away and slowly walks over to Taylor, this being shown through a long shot and then jumps to Taylor slowly walking towards him. She is lip syncing the final chorous 'all this time how could you not,baby you belong with me' then an extreme close up shows both of them pulling out pieces of paper saying 'I Love You' and then an extreme close up as they kiss. Then her lip syncing the final lyric 'you belong with me'.

Brief Textual Analysis of a Music Video

What genre of music does this song fall into? Electropop, dancepop

Is there a relationship between lyrics and visuals in the song? Yes there are many examples used in the video to show the lyrics. A good example of this would be when Lady Gaga signals on her hands answering a telephone illustrating the lyric 'not gonna reach my telephone'.

Is there a relationship between music and the visuals? The visuals also represent the music in a strong way, as the visual dance moves within the video go with the beat and the way the editing is cutting from each scene goes to the beat of the video. An example of this is when Lady gaga and the back in dancers are dancing in the cells, the moves and editing used here go with the music of the song.

What is the importance of the artist in the visuals? The importance of the artist is shown clearly through the visuals, as throught the video she is centred in the video with others behind her, for example in the dance scenes. The other artist Beyonce is also shown as being as important as Lady Gaga, as the scene in the car shows them both being centred. This video is also similar to other videos done by Lady Gaga, as her videos are shown as weird and unique.

Is there any voyeurism in the video? Yes, there may be a sense of the artist being portrayed in a sexual way as her and the back in dancers are dancing in their underwear at the beginning of the video.

What is the mixture in the video between performance and narrative? There is many different points in the video where there is a narrative being told to illustrate the lyrics, however there is more performance showing the artist and selling the artist to the audience throughout the video.

I have many favourite music videos and found it hard to choose just one. I decided to pick Lady Gaga and beyonces video for the song 'Telephone'. I choose this video because it is interesting to watch as you have to follow the story to see what is going on. The video also finishs with a to be continued sign making you wonder what will happen next within the story. I also like the video as it is quite an upbeat song and the sort of tune that gets stuck in your head. I feel that this video uses illustration as what is going on in the video goes with the lyrics to the song. It also uses disjuncture in some parts as some parts of the video doesn't go with the lyrics, however it uses amplification as it is a funny video that would make people happy.

Me as a consumer of Music

How I consume music
I consume music in many different ways usually on the internet or television. The website I use mostly is YouTube to listen to music. I also have downloaded many different songs from iTunes but don't do this on a regular basis. The time I spend listening to music is very often and would say that I am an active listener. This is because I always enjoy having the music channel on at home, this being just left on in the background or me watching the channels. I have many favourite music channels such as viva, 4music, the box, kiss & smash hits. I also like to listen to radio stations on my television like bbc radio 1, the hits radio and heart radio. The channels and stations I listen too are down to the type of music tastes I have.

Personal Music Tastes
I have many different music tastes, some of them being personal and some being influenced by other people such as my parents. My personal music tastes are music such as RnB, Pop & Dance, I enjoy most of the music in the charts. Some of my favourite artists would be JLS, Katy Perry, Olly Murs, Pitbull, Lady GaGa and Jessie J. However I also have other music tastes that have been influenced by my mum, such as going to musicals, I have been to two musicals and enjoy watching and listening to the types of music in them.

Evaluation of AS Foundation Portfolio

Throughout the AS course of creating a foundation portfolio I feel that I worked well in my group. As well as working in a group I also feel I worked well individually but also having weaknessess. However, I think I will be able to overcome these weaknesses throughout the A2 course.

Research and planning
In the stages of researching and planning I feel that I had many strengths in working in my group. By contributing all of my ideas in group discussions. Also my blog was always up to date and was complete with as much detail as possible.

Construction
In the stages of construction I had many strengths and weaknesses, them being that I didnt use the camera as much as the other members of my group as I was in the film opening. But I did more of the editing and gained more skills in using software such as final cut, live type and garage band.

Evaluation
I feel this part of the portfolio was the weakest part of the course as we as a group helped each other out with the evaluation questions. However, I did two questions on my own and did this within the deadline.
